Cedar Ranch vineyard, Illinois Valley- 99 cases produced Soil: Alluvial, Serpentine. Tucked into the corner of the Illinois Valley near Cave Junction, OR, this vineyard sits in what once was a creek bed. 1-3 feet beneath the galets that stud the topsoil, are deposits of the ultramafic rock “serpentine”. This greenish blue rock has unusually high amounts of nickel, cobalt, and iron, which stunts nearly all organic growth. Naturally low fruit production, combined with extreme 50F+ degree diurnal shifts, imbues this Riesling with an unusual concentration of acid and flavor. One that we’re still trying to understand. Brix 22+, pH 3.1, 9 gL ta, 12.5% alcohol.
peach+apricot fruit roll up steeped in Gerolsteiner, golden fruit spectrum, fresh river water, underlying guava throughout. Round + cutting acidity - the lees are showing weight with lightness, the Smaragd ripeness lends this to a serious mouthful of wine that finishes long and dry.
